The Oamaru Mail. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 1910.

Tho gato at the Waimato Show totalled £lO4 14s 6d, as against £IOO Is last year.

Weather permitting, the Garrison 1 Band will render the following programme in the Public Gardens morrow afternoon, starting at 2.30 p.m.: March, "The Powerful" (Carter); long, "Tho Holy City" (Adams); euphonium solo, "Cavatina" (Allan); selection, "La Fillo Bohemienne' (Balfe); trombono solo", "Tho Victory" (Hume); glee, "O Thou Whose Beams ' (Goss); selection, "Le Domino Noil" (Aither); march, "Palmer Houso" (Pctte); "God Save the King."

Yesterday morning Mr Walter 1 Scott, of Dunedin, the official bowl tester, commenced work on Oamaru bowls at the Pcenix Green. The method of tf.iting is interesting, the momentum and direction being given mechanically to each bowl, as it is tested; so that the amount of draw cannot bo doubted. A regulation which will shortly come into force provides that no tournament shall be played under the auspices ot the Association with other than tested bowls. Now that testing is being proceeded with this regulation might very well bo enlarged to apply to local" matches. Many bowlers, as they watched the test to-day, were disappointed to find that their own bowls had not the necessary draw, so that alterations would have to be made before they could be officially stamped.

An interesting ceremony took place at' the close of the quarterly- meeting or the Hampden Athcnrouin Committee, when portraits were unveiled of three life members .of the Athenaeum —Major W. Murcott, C. F. Stoddart, and Mr M. Krakour, whose membership fees when the Athenaeum —or, as it. 'was then, the Mechanics' Institute—was edected in 1870,; made it possible to claim the Government grant of £IOO. -The health "of the only surviving member, Major Murcott, was proposed by Mr Nicolson, and Major Murcott. in his reply, eulogised the work of the two deceased members as pionee'rs of the district, and detailed many of the hardships which proved the spirit of perseverance -possessed by the early residents. Congratulatory speeches were "made by Messrs A. M'Kerrow and the younger members of ; the Committee. "The proceedings closed with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne." Oainaru's contribution to the selfdenial fund of-the Salvation Army was £2OO. Dunedin furnished £949 10s, a record for the city, and tlio'highest individual amount contributed in the South Island for the year. In Timaru £l7O was collected, as compared with £145 last year; in Temuka £lls, against £100; in Wa'imate, £lO4, against £114; in Geraldine £62, compared with £SO last year. Ashburton. gave £150.. At the monthly meeting of the Canterbury Land Board the following transfers were agreed to: L.I.P. 973, lot 20, Block VII., Waikakahi Settlement, 241 alr 29p, John F: Cooneyto Thqs: Cooney and Michael Hynes, of Morven, farbers; l.i.p. 990, lot 2, Block XI.; "Waikakahi Settlement, 278 alr 36p, Patrick J. Callaghan to John Fras. Cooney, of Morveri, farmer. ~" V ~ ' We understand that the winner of the second prize in the class for two-year-; old eutn-e colts at the Waimatc- Show was Messrs Mitchell Bros.'' Candidate, by-Royal Derby, and not Mt- J. Scott's The Laird, as stated in the stewards' list onithe" day of the show. : Candidate; was also one of the winning trio ill;the class for entire with three of. his progeny. •'■..' .

Our WellingLon correspondent telegraphs: —The Association having protested against the compulsion of youths to attend teclHiical classes, the'provision has been amended so as to exempt youths during "ordinary hours of employment." November 9th, which has so long been recognised as a public'holiday, first as Prince of Wales' Birthday and' afterwards as the King's Birthday., has now ceased to exist as such. -Under the Factories Act the holiday has been transferred to Juno 3rd, "that being King George's natal, day. Under the Shops Act the holiday* is similarly transferred, and, of course, under "awards in wl/ich are specified tho birthday of. the reigning Sovereign, not holiday can be. enforced on November Oth, but if awards provide for that day then presumably the same"must be observed.'A remarkablo was put up on a run from Oamaru to tho Wai-mate-Show in the new "Overland" car .which tho North Otago Farmers' Cooperative Association haio just purchased. Mr M'Quiu, thwAssociation's agent, who declares he Kid never before touched the steering wheel of a car, took the wheel just outside Ouinaru boundary, and drove through to AVaimate without a stop (and without any of the occupants of the car touching the wheel), doing the journey in one hour twenty minutes. On the return trip the express train, whirh the party was anxioul to catch at Oamaru, passed the car near Richmond's., and the distance from Pukeuri Point to Usk street (about six miles) was done, m exactly nine minutes —forty miles uu hour. 222
