OBITUARY.

MR THOMAS HARTLEY.

! 'The old settlers of Oamaru are . diminishing in number daily, and another of them in the person of Mr Thomas Hartley died at Papakaio,-this morning. The deceased gentleman for : some time past had been in failing health, and-last week had' a paralytic , stroke, gradually failing:since then. He was horn at Keighly, Yorkshire, ■ in 1834, and was'therefore; in his 77tli year. With his -wife -and ■-voting family ■lie came, to New Zealand,-• landing : at : .Port Chalmers.in:February^•: 1863. From Port Clialmers: he came: direct to Oamaru, and for 17 years engaged in i agricultural work. During that time he interested himself in the formation of the first horticultural society and was also one of the founders 'of : the pioneer cricket club of the district. 11l other sports he took an active interest/ - In 1880 he went south and was 1 engaged in farming m the Winton district for seven years. At the end of' that'! time he; returned to Oamaru and acquired a farm at Papakaio, where he has resided ever since, improving the farm, by a compre- i liensive system ot drainage.: , The deceased is survived by Mrs: Hartley, and; he also leaves three sons (Mr John. Hartley, of Papakaio;. Mr Albert Hartley, Invercargill, and Mr .Wm. H. Hartley, of Oamaru) and four daughters (Mrs .R. Markland, of Oamaru, Mrs A. Kennedy, of -Windsor, Mrs J. Frame, of Danediij,s»and rMrs M 'Leod, -of Papakaio). His ilcscendants also include 31 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. The late Mrs A. S. Familton 'was a .daughter of the deceased gentleman.
