BOOKMAKERS TRESPASS.
(Per Press Association.) Christehurch. September 28. \b the Magistrate's Court this morning fourteen reputed bookmakers were charged with having trespassed on the Riccartoii racecourse at the time ot the Grand National meeting. Eleven were fined 40s each, one 20s, one case was adjourned, and one was dismissed. In the case of Mat, Livingstone it was contended for the defence that the accused had not been a bookmaker since April He admitted that he had backed horses since then, and had. supplement--1 ed his income, in that way. The Magistrate held that he came within the' definition of a bookmaker, and convicted him. The Act says a bookmaker is a man who earns Ins living wholly or in part by wagering or betting.
