PALMERSTON NOTES.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) The annual mooting of the Palmerstun Racing Club was hold on Thursdny evening last, when there was a lair attendance of members. The President (Mr 10. Loi'ovro) occupied the chair. The balance-shoot showed Hint at the beginning of the vear the Club had a ciedit balance <;f' £7O Ss J0(1, that £OS was expended during the year
on the new course, and that the cash balance to the credit of the Club on the 81st August last was £139 19s. The assets were estimated at £212 I Is and tlie liabilities at £5. As there will be no racy- mooting this year, the {'lection of officers was held over until the next annual mooting. Mr Angus Eraser, who retired last week on superannuation from the railway service, after 32 years' service as a surfaceman, was on Friday night presented by tlie railway employees with a. gentleman's companion. AA'e trust that Mr Frascr, who is a man of sterling character and an old identity of the district, will enjoy for many years his well-earned retirement. The farmers of the district are well pleased with the lambing this year. The weather so far has been most favorable. The reports show that the poroentago will in all probability bo much above the average. Tlie crops, however, are in sore plight by reason of the continued drought. The dearth | 1 of rain and the westerly gales experienced for the last fortnight have severely retarded the season's growth. Published amongst the names of the successful candidates for the Trinity College .examinations in music are those of two Palmerston ladies, viz.. Miss. AVinifred Appleby in the senior honors class.and Miss Eleanor Gwynno in the lower division. The Rev. Father Lynch, who has been in charge of the Palmerston parish for 14 years, has been appointed irremovable rector at Wrey's Bnsh, rendered vacant by the death of the Rev. Father Walsh. Father Lynch, who is respected by all classes of the community, will be succeeded by the Rev. John Lynch, of Gore. A four-roomed dwellinghouso, owned and occupied by Mr John Spillane, was destroyed by fire on Thursday morning, a defective chimney being the probable cause. The building was insured in the- State office for £IOO. The furniture was uninsured.
