"PETE."

Messrs Clark and Meynell's production of Hall Caiue's celebrated drama of sentiment and human passions, "Pete," to be staged at the Opera House to-night, promises to mark an epoch in the theatrical annals of this town. Mr IT. R. Roberts will be seen as Pete, and this clever and popular actor will be called upon to enact a very difficult but congenial role. The successful portrayal of Pete calls upon all the qualities of the experienced actor, and Mr Roberts is not only a born actor, but he has profited by his training and experience in New, York and London, where lie has been in the forefront among the world's stars. We have only to remind otfr readers of his beautiful characterisation of the ''Prince Chap".; no further recommendation is necessary. Miss Beatrice Day, who was especially retained' by the management to create the part of Kate C'regeen in New Zealand, is probably one of the finest emotional actresses who have as yet visited our shores. Her work at the head of the late Brough-Flemming Company is a pleasant recollection :n the- memories of local playgoers. The remaining members of this extensive company are said to be admirably adapted to their different roles, and it would be difficult to realise a more finished and finer conception of the many parts in Mr Hall Caine's great play.
