For the first time in upwards of IS months (says the Star) all the waterside workers at Port Chalmers have heen continuously employed for the past two weeks. This has heen due to the annual overhaul and docking of the Moana and the arrival of several vessels to discharge coal and othercargo. Some difficulty was experienced in procuring labor inr the loading of the oversea steamer Tainui. 3ien were employed at tiie Maitai. ?.lonowai. and Moana. It is said to be now definitely decided that the western entrance to the Panama Canal shall be deiended by three small island iorts and one on the mainland. At the Atlantic end two land fortifications are to be erected. one each .side of the canal. They will be armed with 14in. jiuns with hydraulic elevating and 6iu. ([uic-kfirers. A Press Association wire says that the r:q>ert of coal from Oreymouth last week was nearly a record for the port, colliers cominir in and i£oiny withoutslightest delay.
