The Northern Union-'.football match was -played- here to-day between the British and Auckland teams, and resulted in a •'win for the Britishers by .52 points to .9, In the first spell the visitors were irresistible, their back play being brilliant, while the forwards were very dashing. Lomas was the star, of the match. The "first spell ended with the score: British 41, Auckland 3. This was composed of nine tries, seven being converted. In the second spell the British team took matters quietly, with the result that, only 11 points wore added by them to 6 by the local team.. The game" was witnessed by 10,000 persons; who were evidently greatly pleased with the match. Tries were scored ';y. J, Jenkins, Jukes (2), Davies (3), Riley (2), Leytham, Kershaw, Lomas, and Winstanley. Lomas converted seven tries and Leytham one. The team will leave for Rotorua by Monday's express, and return to Auckland in time to play a match against- a New Zealand team next Saturday.

. The Maori team defeated the '_:ombined Manawatu and Horowhenua ream to-day by 15 points to 6. The game gave the spectators a glimpse of what the visitors were capable of doing with the -ball, for the combined team, although lacking combination, were able to extend them, in fact, were unlucKV not to have scored on several occasions. The Maoris started well, and with several brilliant passing rushes left tin 1 home-team standing still, registering two tries in quick succession, Kaipara aild Winiata crossing, Cunningham converting. The combined team individually shaped well. The forwards of the team time and again forced play into the Maoris'- 25, but opportunities were lost through lack of combination in the backs, and their efforts were powerless against the opposition. Jnst before the spell concluded, from a ceu7 trekick, the Maoris' backs gained possession, and a brilliant piece of passing among the backs enabled Nuku to cross and Cunningham converted, the score at half-time being 15 to nil. The Manawatu-Horowhenua men opened the "second spell in a very determined manner, alid worked the play into the Maoris' territory, who relieved with a number of passing rushes, which, fortunately for the combined team, started well down the field. The home team were not to be denied. The forwards were playing well. Mnnro, Mullins, and Carroll raced the ball up the field, the oval going out at the corner. From a scrum Ropata dashed across. Maoris 15, Combined 3. Shortly after this the combined team secured the ball at halfHughes sending the ball across with a brilliant kick. .Scores, 15—8. Manawatu were having all the best of the game, but there were brilliant flashes of passing by the Maoris, which electrified the crowd as well as the players. The match was a . good one, and the players certainly'upheld the standard of football with which they have been credited.

, ( DUNEDIN MATCHES. (Feb Press Association.) Dunedin, July 23. , The football matches were continued to-day in dull and cold weather. The grounds were heavy owing to the frequent showers in the forenoon. Alhambra "(12) beat University (3); Port Chalmers (6) beat Southern (nil); ZingariRichmond (10) beat Taieri Rovers (nil); Dunedin, (18) beat Pirates (nil); Union (3) beat Kaikorai (nil).
