TAPUI SCHOOL CONCERT.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) A concert and dance in aid of the Tapui School funds was held in the Tapui railway goods shed on Friday evening, July 22nd. The night was a perfect one for such an occasion. The moon was full, though the air smelt of :a keen frost. Therefore a great many people from a distance put in an appearance which otherwise would not have been the case had the weather conditions not been favorable. The Tapui folk have long felt the want of a school in their district, and at last they have secured one, thanks to the wisdom of a very energetic committee set up for the purpose, and now that their wishes have been gratified it is to be hoped that both parents and children will derive some benefit from it. The Chairman of the. School Committee (Mr E. S. Smith), in a few wellchosen remarks to a crowded house, proceeded to open the concert, the first item being a piano overture by the Misses Conlaii, followed by a song from Mr Wilson; recitation, Mr Wyllie; song, Miss Collett; comic song, Mr Glen; phonograph selections, Master D. Little; song, Mrs Kinloch; humorous recitation, Mr Puist: and selections on the bagpipes by Messrs Little and Wilson brought the first part of the programme to a close. After an interval of ten minutes the following ladies and gentlemen took part in the second half of the programme:—Piano and violin selections, Mrs Wilson and Mr Glen; song, Miss Collett; song, Mr Wilson; song, Airs Kinloch; comic song, Mr Glen ; and Mr James Hair, of Oamaru, brought the concert to a very successful finish by giving to the audience an exhibition of ventriloquism. After a

hearty vote of thanks to the performers had been recorded, refreshments were handed round, of which there was an abundance, ably catered for by Mr R. J. Keys, of Oamaru. I may here mention that the ladies of Tapui, and also the working committee, deserve special praise for the, way that they kept everything well in hand, causing no inconvenience to themselves or to those that were regaling themselves with the good things provided. The floor was cleared for dancing, and was kppt going vigorously till about 3.30 a.m., when cheers were called for Mr Boyee, who so ably supplied the music;'Mr Haydon, who made a very efficient M.C.; and our genial friend Mr T. S. Little, who is a host in himself where anything in the way of school matters are concerned. The singing of "Auld Lang Syne" brought to a close a most enjoyable event, long to be retained in the minds of the Tapui people.
