IN THE COURTS.

At the • Magistrate's Court to-day James Railton, charged with tampering with the machinery of the Gisborne Times Company, and also with theft, was committed for trial'at next sitting of the Supreme Court. Wellington, July 23. In the Supreme Court to-day,' the Chief Justice presiding, George William M'Donald was sentenced to nine months' imprisonment for forgery and uttering at Palmerston North. Sentence on the Maori youth, Augustus Rewi Wallace, who had pleaded guilty to theft from the convent at Otaki, was postponed till Friday next. Two youths, Charles King and Frank Dean, who appeared for sentence on a charge of assault with intent to rob (the case concerned the sticking-up with a little shooting at a Chinese camp at Paraparauinu), were convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon, on condition they were not seen out after 6 o'clock at night. Monthly reports as to behavior of accused arc to be furnished by their employers. His Honor said that the affair was probably the aftermath of what they had seen in the attitude of some people towards individuals carrying loaded revolvers. He considered it a very seriour affair, and only the youth of ac- - cused, as they were both mere boys; prevented him imposing a long term of imprisonment.
