WAIMATE BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A meeting o! the above was held on Tuesday. I2lh, at 7.W1 p.m. Present: The Deputy Mayor (Councillor lnkster) and Councillors Com. .Miller,. Manchester, Jones. Coiieit. Hunt. Hint, and Sanders. Our overdraft is 'S-i'J.i 7s -1 < i and accounts are presented for payment tonight amounting to t-!74 os 6d. Included in the payments is £220, being half-year's interest on water loan and the animal instalment of £IOO to the sinking fund.. As you will have noticed,, the .Municipal Conference sat in AVellington last week, and this borough was ably lenresented by Sir W. J. Steward, who writes that all the remits -favored by this Council were passed. There is every indication that the authorities arc prepared to give greater consideration to the wishes of the Association than in the past, and it is anticipated that some at least of the "recommendations of this year's Conference will be placed on the Statutes. Our contractor lor shingle carting delivered 350 yards, a little over one-third of the contract, when owing to the very wot weather, operations had to be suspended." Sir \Y. J. Steward wrote that he had attended the Municipal Association's Conference as the Council's delegate. and lie had pleasure in notifying that all remits favored by the Council were •passed.—Resolved to heartily thank Sir AA'm. Steward for attending to the Council's interests.
The County Council forwarded permission to lay water mains in Upper High street.—Received. The AYaimate Gas and Coal Company, Ltd., asked for the use of Council Chambers for holding its annual meeting of shareholders. —Granted on same terms as before. H. Leybotiine applied for a billiard -saloon keeper's license. —Granted, subject to favorable police report being obtained. It was agreed, on the recommendation of a special committee, to consent to a transfer of three acres, being part of an area leased by Mr Lawlor, tn the South Canterbury Education Hoard for the purpose of agricultural instruction, at a rental, including rates, of £lO Ills per annum. The Sanitary Committee reported that the probable cost of a drain from the Union Bank corner to Michael street would be £240, and the Committee could not favor the laying of such a drain for the few property-owners affected, and reccn mended issue of notices to stop discharging sewage into the brick and main drains. —The report was discussed, and on the motion of Councillors Sanders and Cox adopted. The Clerk v.-as instructed to notify Borough Council tenants to clear their sections of gorse and br:.:>m. Accounts amounting to £474 os 6d were passed for payment.
