(Per Press Association.) Hastings, July 11. At a meeting of the Fruit-growers' Association an important discussion followed the reading of Mr Kirk's letter explaining the Hon. Dr Findlay's proposal that prison labor should be used to plant orchards for lease or sale to approved orchardists, and disclaiming any intention on the part of the Minister to have fruit grown by prisoners brought' into competition with private enterprise. The meeting c.xyfrcss.od disapproval of the proposals and "resolved —"That this Association'strongly protests against- the Government planting orchards, and urges that prison labor be utilised in planting trees to provide timber for commercial requirements."
