Mr Lloyd-George. defending the Budget. made a graceful reference to Mr Joseph Chamberlain's birthday, and received cheers. He appealed to the House to support pauper pensions. The ratepayers should contribute to the oxchequer the amount by which they were benefited. The exchequer could not carry the whole miilioit and a-half without postponing the invalidity and insurance schemes. ' The Government would make endeavors in 1911 tcr readjust Imperial and local taxation. Replying to those who assailed him in the press for protecting the Cocoa* Trust, he said the fax was not a new one. The exchequer could not spare six thousand, and the impost did not benefit the manufacturer, because he was not getting the aid of a drawback. ... Replying to the criticism 911 the raising of the sulking fund, which was now Used at twent v-four . and a-half millions, lie claimed that this year s provisions for the reduction of the national debt would exceed by two millions the highest reduction made by the Unionist Government..
