W. l'"r( email: Hon. _ Veterinary Surgeon. Mr H. it. \\ali:uv; Secretary, Mr G. M. Proctor. FIRST DAY. " " Y*esterday\s racing afforded a good afternoon's sport —there was not one or the.seven event-; but what had its own interesting features. not the least of which were the large fields and the close finshes. 'lhe Hurdles afforded a capital opening and put everybody m good humor. Stone Ginger s win was a popular one. and Vihatakura was not without good opinions. Hie wellknown hurdler Kingman was a competitor, but although he showed good form, ie was not eriuai to the day, and had to be satisfied with an unplaced position. Waiju won the Tokaralii Welter Handicap in a manner which fu.lly justified the confidence of his admirers. The Trial Plate produced a field of 16, and the winner, who turned up unexpectedly in Oblong, paid his backers a substantial dividend. In 1907 Mr H. A. Knight won the Oamaru Cup with Lapland, and yesterday the same owner's representative Tikitere again earned for him the honor. The mare re-asserted the form shown jn Timaru, when she tied with Oiyoi over a mile and a quarter course; while Oiyoi evidently found the Oamaru Cup distance too short. Immediately after the race the Cup was presented in front of the Grand Stand. The VicePresident of the Club (Mr A. Potter) in a felicitous speech, apologised for fhe unavoidable absence of the President and congratulated the winner; NUterwards calling upon Mrs Buckloysto make the presentation, the trophy received by Tikitere's trainer (Mr D. Roberts). "Cheers were called for Mrs Buckley, Mr Knight, the trainer, and the mare, and heartily given. The Waiareka Handicap and the Railway Handicap were each well fought races, the former, in which Seagar and Shindy finished a dead heat and Miss Dorie was almost on equal terms, being especially so. All the competitors faced the barrier in the last race. Cute was a hot favorite; and on her form she certainly looked like a winner, coming through the field in great style. All Guns, however, was out for business and full of running. He successfully accepted , Cute's challenge and raced home a winner a length ahead. , Yesterday the sum of £4099 was passed through the totalisator as compared with £3824 on the first day of fast year's winter meeting. Eleven bookmakers * were licensed at a fee of £2O 10s. of yesterday's racing:— RAILWAY HANDICAP, of 50 soys; second horse to receive 5 sovs out of the stake; for horses that have never won an advertised fiat race exceeding 30 sovs in value at time of nomination. Two lengths separated All Guns and Cute, a head only between Cute and Balaclava. Time, . lmin 16 l-o sec. SECOND DAY. - This morning broke grey, and overhanging clouds threatened rain. Therewas, however, a mild air, spring warm, in fact, and the climatic conditions were not considered unfavorable to a good afternoon's sport. As was the case yesterday, the fields were well filled, the racing keen, and the finishes exciting. The attendance fell short oF yesterday's certainly, but then yesterday was Empire Day and a holiday, and ample opportunity was given to townspeople to attend. The details of the meeting were carried out to the entire satisfaction of everybody, and to the credit of the responsible officials, while the clerical arrangements were kept well iu hand by Mr Procter and his staff. The Oamaru Professional Orchestra again provided a programme of music which was greatly appreciated. Following are the results: — WAIKAURA HURDLE HANDICAP, of 100 sovs; second horse to receive 20 sovs, and the third 10 spvf, out of the stake. One mile and three-quarters.
