CLASSIFICATION OF SCHOOL TEACHERS.
(Per Pbess Association.) New Plymouth, April 271 . At a meeting of the Taranaki Education ' Board, the Board's Inspectors (Messrs W. A. Ballantyne and R. G. Whetter) reported on the question of the classification of teachers. They recommended that the following scheme be adopted as the basis of classification with a total of 100 marks: Service 10 marks (2 years 1 mark), academic attainment 15 marks, teaching proficiency 40 marks, personality (including tone, tact, influence, and thoroughness) 20 marks, organisation 10 marks, environment 5 marks. The Inspectors added that this scheme was th§ one adopted as a basis of : classification for teachers of the whole colony by the conference of school inspectors recently held at Wellington. The Board decided to adopt the scheme, and at a later stage adopted the following system of transfer and promotion :—(1) That after June Ist, in the appointment of teachers, the Board shall first of all consider if it has a teacher in its service suitable to fill, the vacancy, and if so, then that teacher, shall be transferred to the vacancv provided the Committee concerned raises no valid objection to the appointment; (2) that in any case where no suitable teacher is available applications shall' be invited, and the procedure laid down by the Act followed; (3) that the Board as a whole be the Selection Committee.
