THE ARNST-WHELCH BOAT RACE.

(Per Press Association.) Akarna, March 31. llotli Arnst and Whcleh took a day oft' yesterday, except for walking exer•>iso', and spent the day polishing their boats ami adjusting the riggers. Whelch is heavier than when he rowed the lust race-, scaling 9st 12.\1h. He declares himself to be very lit, and never better in his life, and his party are quietly confident. Arnst was off color on Tuesday night with some slight stomach trouble, but the day's spell set him right again. He weighs last 31b this morning, and will probabjv be a shade heavier on Saturday. Whelch was first out this morning, shortly after ten, with I;'. 0. Westenra.' an B Akaroa amateur, to pace him. The water down the harbor was lumpy, but the challenger probably liad 'l.:'J or 2 inches good water, and he came back with the pacer at solid threequarlor speed. He was getting a fair swing, and finished his stroke with a push that suggested improved leg work. Then Arnst and Felton left their shed and pulled out to the edge of the rough water, andcame back over the same course as Whelch. The champion was pulling 23 or 24, but e\en at that measure his pacer was of little use to him over the last threequarters of a mile. When ho returned to the shod his only reply to the question of how he felt was "Grand."
