A resolution was passed protesting against Judge Hovel on placing the Free Laborers' Union on the Wharf Laborers' Wages Board. Newcastle. March 29. The Engine-drivers' Wages Board fixed tho pay ranging from 13Jcl to 16.] d an hour, and mechanics from 13.Vd to 16d an hour. • Melbourne, March 29. Owing to a dispute with tho timber stackers there is a likelihood, if the trouble is not' promptly adjusted, that the Timber Merchants' Association will closo their yards, causing a lock-out disastrous to the building trade, and throwing thousands idle. AMERICA FORESEES TROUBLE. Received March 29, at 9.20 p.m.
New York, March 29. The united mine workers unanimously rejected the Ohio, Indiana, and West Pennsylvania mine-owners' terms, and a great strike is feared. The union trainmen and conductors on the lakeshore of the Michigan and Southern railroad are taking a ballot owing to the failure of the negotiations to settle outstanding disputes." New York, March 29. The Central Railway conductors and trainmen have demanded an increase of wages ranging from 8 to 8t per cent. The company offered S to 25 per cent. increase. A strike vote is - being taken. Received March 30, at 11.40 a.m. London, March 29. The conference in South Wales indicates a- probable ending of the coal crisis. Received March 30, at 9.15 a.m. London, March 29. The Northumberland colliery dispute has resulted in a fire gaining hold of the Radcliffe Colliery owing to the neglect of the fire barriers. The owners are flooding the mine, which has thrown a. thousand hands out of work. LOCAL BODIES' RESPONSIBILITIES. (Per Press Association.) Dunedin, March 30. The Conciliation Commissioner this morning met delegates from the local bodies and representatives of the Genera] Laborers' Union . interested in work controlled by the local bodies. The applications for exemption by the City Council and the Harbor Board were opposed by Mr Mi'Manus, representing the Laborers' Union, but were granted bv Mr Triggs, the Commissioner.
