FIRES.
Per Press Association. Wellington, March 30. A fire at Lower Hutt early this morning destroyed a joinery, plumber's, and painter's shop, and the contents of a timber yard belonging to Strand Bros, sawmillers. The heavy gale interfered greatly with, the work of the brigade, which," however, managed to save the adjoining residences, but not before some £250 in damage had been done to the outbuildings and house of P. H. Gosse. Strand's works and machinery were insured in the South British Office for £7OO, but the loss exceeds the insurance by several hundreds. Gosse's house was" insured for £4OO in the -Royal, and the furniture for £l5O in the' New Zealand. Napier, March 30. A five-roomed dwelling, owned by Mr Lascelles and occupied by W. J. Sandford, was totally destroyed by fire early this morning. The flames being fanned by a heavv southerly gale, everything was burned and the inmates had a narrow escape. The insurance on the building is £2OO in the Sun office, and on the furniture £IOO in the London and Lancashire.
