SCULLING.

THE SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP. HOW BARRY IS TRAINING. 1 (From Our Own Correspondent.) f London, February 11. . Of course the doming race on the Zambesi (the -Sam-be-easy as "Doggett' Cobb calls it) .is all the talk of the sculling circles. Hitherto_ 1 have not referred to it 3 as I imagine you hftvc all details by cable. There will, however, be many little items which you will not get in this way. About £SOO of the money that is required lias been subscribed. Of that amount nearly three-quarters has been given by rowing men, who fully realise what a splendid thing it would be for this country if Barry returned to las native land a. world's champion. A little variety Is to be imparted into Barry's work, for from to-day oijwards be will indulge in short sprints on the Heme Hill cinder track. Sullivan wishes him to loosen up his limbs a trifle, and has asked him to indulge in nothing but sharp speed bursts. The English boats that are to be taken out for Barry are now in hand. At the present time he is using tlio Charlotte Gertrude, in which' he defeated Towns for the English championship, but as soon as the others are completed "lie will try them Sims Bros., who are making two. have been waiting for some special Mexican timber, which has. now arrived. The -double- scalier, built by Clasper for the trainer, is, however, finished. Pheps, who is building tlio other boat, is also constructing a motor launch, that is to be used by the. umpire for the race. This will lie first tried on the Thames, and then, after being taken to pieces, will be shipped to Rhodesia.

A big effort is being made to raise the money .that is required to cover the heavy expenses of the race. One that is likely to be of interest, and will be excellently supported by rowing men is a special concert that is to be held in the large hall of the Star and Garter, Putney, in March. Mr Tom Herbert, of the Strand, has taken the matter in hand, and already that wellknown comedian, Mr Alec. Hurley, lias promised his own services and those of any other artists he can secure. As both tlio University crews will be in Putney on that date, training for their race of March 23rd, the concert will most likely receive their support.
