V R.C. RACES. Received October 30, at 6.25 p.m.

Melbourne, October 30. The Victorian Racing Club's meeting opened in delightfully cool weather, and Flemington was looking its best. There, was a large and fashionable attendance, including the Governor-General and Ladv Dudlev, the State Governor (Sir T. Carmichael) and Lady Carmichael, Lord iClielmsford and Lady Chelmsford (Queensland), and' Sir H. Barron (Governor of Tasmania). The programme opened with the. Maiden Plate, which was captured by Barn, a New Zealand-bred horse', Gunpowder running rather disappointingly. The Maribyrnong Plate was a gift to Desert Rose, who, like Lager and Roseen, the other placed horses, and Barn, .were sired by Maltster. In the Hothain Handicap Delaware ran a good race, leading-, with Vivacious, for most of the journey, but was beaten for fourth place in the finish. Scddon was only once prominent. The Derby was a good race. Most of the running was made by Lord Foote, who led . the field a merry pace, and 011 entering the home turn Prince Foote came away, winning easily, to the great delight of. the crowd, who predicted him .as the winner of the: Melbourne Cup 011 the form displayed. The ilelboiirne Stakes was a rattling good race all the way, another of Maltster's progeny scoring after a fine finish with Trafalgar. The New Zealand-bred Golden Slipper was always prominent in the, rjice, but could not get nearer than third, owing to earlier efforts. Artillerie.was at the tail end of the field most of the time, but finished sixth, full of running. Kerlie, sired by Stepniak, accounted for the Coburg Stakes in a smartly run race, beating the Maltster gelding by three lengths, Son of a Gun two lengths away,-third, Montcalm looked like winning at one time. Artilleric failed to show up at all in this race. Results : Melbourne Stakes. —Alawa 1, Trafalgar 2, Golden Slipper 3. The other starters were: Knox, Post Town, Blue Book, Gaby, Pendil, Hymen, Lord Nolan, Artellerie, and Nushka, Hymen and Golden Slipper made most of the running, Alawa always lying handy. Trafalgar, Alawa, and Golden Slipper swung round together at the home turn, .Alawa winning by a length and a-lialf, Golden Slipper six lengths away third. Time, 2min 73 sec. Maribyrnong Plate. —Desert -Rose, 9.1, 1: Large, 8.5, 2; Roseen, 5.5, 3. Other starters: Habel, . Indiscreet, Ringadoon, Rollingstone, Rheims, Gunplay, Flamen, Tanami, Procene, Carcanet, Kern, Teringa, and Baza. Gunplay was first to break the line, but Desert Rose took charge 011 entering the course proper and was never headed, winning bv a length and a quarter, a length between second and third. Time, lmin 3-Asec. Hotham Handicap.—Footpad, 6.10, 1: Vivacious, 6.9, 2; Carabar, 7.2, 3. Ten others ran. Won by three-quarters of a length, two lengths between second and third. Time, 2min 37sec. Derby.—Prince Foote (M'Cartliy), 1; Danilo' (Connell), „2: Lord - Foote> (M'Lachlan), 3. Other starters: Manana, Mutilator, Sir Edwin., Mala, Lady San, Byplay. To a good- start Manana and Prince Foote were the first to lead, but Lord Foote went out and led by twelve lengths for half a mile from Manana, Danilo, and Princ.e F'oote. Coining into the straight, Prince. Foote and Danilo caught him, Prince Foote dashing out and winning by six lengths, a head separating Lord Foote and Danilo. Lady San was fourth', Byplay fifth, "Mutilator sixth, Sir Edwin seventh, and Mala eighth, Manana being last. Time,' 2min 37sec. Coburg Stakes. —Kerlie 1, Malmsey 2, Son of a Gun 3. Fifteen others started. Won by. three lengths, two lengths between second and third. Time, lmin 40Jsec.
