NOTES. The Whangape, from Dunedin, arrived in Oamaru at 6 o'clock last evenin;; u-ith 200 tons of Westport coal to [arid. She is expected to sail about midnight for Timaru. Tim Koonya is time-tabled to leave Dunedin at 3 o'clock to-morrow afternoon for Oamaru. It is anticipated that the barquentine Speculant will finish discharging tier cargo of timber to-morrow, and will proceed to take in ballast, afterwards sailing for Hokianga. The I'aparoa, which arrived at Wellington on Monday, is expected to sail for Lvttelton to-morrow. After completiiig discharging at Lyttelton she proceeds for loading to Bluff, Timaru. Lvttelton, Wellington, Napier, and Auckland, sailing from the latter port on the itfth inst for London. The following steamers will make Rio de Janeiro an additional port of call (Inrirtg the passenger season next year: Runtime ( IIVJOO tons), sailing from New Zealand Kith february, 1910: Ruapehu. sailing from New Zealand 10th March. 1910: and Rimutaka, sailing from New Zealand 7th April, 1910. The latest battleships are of peculiar interest, on account of the extent to which electricity is utilised in them (says the London Daily Telegraph). In the Temeraire it is used so considerably for various purposes that there is something approaching 140 miles of electric wire, and no fewer than 130 motors. This ship carries a searchlight equal to 4,000,0110 candle-power, and the vessel's wireless apparatus carries 1100 miles. The cwal capacity is 2400 tons, and the consumption is about 500 tons per day at full speed. She carries a very powerful armament, consisting of 10 liin guru of the Mark X pattern, and 16 4iu quick-firers. The big guns are curried in turrets, two in each. Each turret weighs about 400 tons, and is protected with 12in armour, while each <?in weighs about 5S tons, and has a supply of SO rounds of ammunition, SoOlb shells. To work the guns the hydraulic pressure used is 10001b to the square inch.
