ACCIDENTS & FATALITIES.
(Pirn Press Association.) Christchureh, August 30. About one o'clock this afternoon :i van belonging to G. Ritchie, carrier, and a tram car. returning to the Square from Edgeware road, collided at the in-u-.-section of Chester and Colombo streets, with the result that a young man named Birmingham was severely injured and the conveyance badly damaged. It appears that Ritchie, Birmingham, and another young man were driving from Chester street over Cn!o:nbo street to Oxford Terrace, and the van had just reached the line when the car caught the bac-k of it, and capsized it. The horse was thrown into the roadway. Birmingham was severely cut about the head and body, and Ilitchie al.-o received flight injuries. Birmingham was conveyed to the hospital. ,
A girl aged about 20 years attempted suicide last night at Manchester street, bridge, over the Avon. She was noticed by a young man. who saw her cliinb on to the railing of the bridge and fling hiTselt into the water. He followed into the river and pulled her to the shore. This morning she appeared at the -Magistrate's Court to answer a charge of attempted suicide. Sub-In-spector .M : (;rath said that as far as ho could discover the girl had had a severe illness si;ii>e years ago, and since then had been subject to fits of melancholia. She. was !ivi:ig with her parents. Mr I'. Haselden, S.M., said that he would not address the girl in jmblic, but would leave the matter to her family. Shi" was convicted and discharged. Rcefton. August 30. Hie body of A. R. Baxter, Singer sewing machine agent, drowned in the Little Grey I?ivi-r on July 27th, was re»-:>v;red yesterday.
