FIRES.

(Per Press Association.) Christchurch, August 30. Hon." W. Montgomery's bouse at Little River ivss destroyed by fire on Saturday afternoon. The fire originated in a shed at the hack and spread so quickly that it could not be stopped until it 'reached the mein building, which was soon totally destroyed. It was a large structure of "13 rooms. Assistance was given to remove the contents, and some furniture was soved. The Hon. Mr Montgomery, who is an invalid, was in the house at the time, hist he was removed to his son's house adjoining. The house and furniture wore partly covered by insurance in the Alliance, the former for £IOOO and the latter ofr £350. The damage is considerablv more than the insurance. Wellington,-August 30. A house in Kent Terrace, owned by Dr Young and occupied by several tenants, was gutted by fire. Indications of fire were noticed an hour before it broke out and a search was made without avail. Afterwards the flames burst out under a staircase and r overran the place at once. Most of the occupants had little insurance and are heavy losers, but the house was insured for' £IOOO. The tenants were covered for about £225. Yesterday au unoccupied building at Petone belonging to the Railway Department . was burned. It was valued at about £6000..
