LICENSING COMMITTEES.

" The election of a licensing committeeresulted, after one of the keenest contests on record, in the defeat of the candidates pledged l to the maximum reduction of licenses, which would; have entailed the closing of fourteen hotels. The Citizens' League (moderate) ticket was returned. The successful candidates were: Messrs Ba"naJl, Holland, Mennie, Somers, and Dr°King. r , „ Dunedin, March 9. Considerable interest was taken in the licensing election, each side being represented by five candidates. The result was that the No-license party's tickel, was returned, the numbers being: Calder 7259, Wilkinson 7107, do Lautour 7092, Phillips 7079, King 7027 (elected), Burnett 6403, Braithwaite 6370, Crust 6311, Arkle 6319, Small. 6190. In Dunedin South the temperance. committee was also elected. It is understood that both committees will refuse to grant bottle licenses. Ohristchur.ch, March 9. The Avon Licensing Committee, election j resulted in the no-license candidates being returned. -,At Lyttelton and Riccartoii the moderate candidates were returned. Woodville, March 10. Four out of the five of the licensing committee were elected on the no-license ticket. Nelson, March 10. The No-license party, with 10 o'clock closing as their ticket, carried all before them at the licensing poll yesterday. Of the old committeemen four out of the five sought re-election. Of these Messrs X. Trask (11 o'clock) and P. W. Coleman (10 o'clock) were defeated, while Mr Atmore (10 o'clock) and Mr P. Best (11 o'clock) were returned. The other three successful candidates were nominees by the No-license League and advocates of 10 o'clock closing and the refusal of bootli licenses—viz., Messrs T. Pettit, M'Laren, and Watson. Of the votes 6182 were lulled for 10 o'clock straight out- and 3939 for the "moderate" ticket, which held unspecified opinions on the hour.
