The public services are improving, nnd the people are calmer. Tho Italian Deputies met in the ruins at Messina and unanimously resolved upon the resurrection of the city. A further shock at Messina destroyed the beautiful cemetery with the famous Orange Groves.

The comorra. practised a heartless hoax on the inhabitants of the suburbs of Naples. Karly in the morning alarmists Tuslicd through tho streets shouting "flio earthquake," others clanged the church bells. Tho residents in a panic rushed half naked into tho streets seeking tho open while the criminal gangs looted the deserted shops and dwellings. Up till Tuesday night 2300 persons had been recovered alivo 111 Messina. Loudon, January 7. rhe Mansion House Fund now amounts to £65,000. The American fund is £500,000, including Now York's £BO,OOO. Tho citizens of Tokio gave £BOOO. Received January 8, at 10.10 a.m. Sydney, January 8. Tho Earthquake Relief Committee cabled £IOOO to Italy. Recoived January 8,. at 0.20 a.m. Melbourne, January 7. New Zealand's contribution of £6OOO to the relief fund in, connection with the Italian earthquake has been acknowledged in tho following term* by the- Italian Governmont in a cablo to tho High Commissioner: "In tho namo of the Italian Government and the nation I convey our sincore thanks to the Uovernmelit of Now Zealand for thoir prompt sympathy in the calamity in Italy, and for their conspicuous, bounty on behalf of the bictims of tho disaster.—Giomtti, President of the Council of Ministers, Home."
