King's Commander (13557 C.5.8.), (imp.), was bred by Commander Stewart, Knockrioch, Campbelltown, and is a brown horse foaled 1902. Sire, Carthusian (9722); g-sire, Castlereagh; gg-sire, Darnley (222). Dam, May Maid, by Premier Prince; g-dam, Jess of May, by Campbell's Lome. Carthusian was 2nd at Edinburgh as a foal, Ist at Durham as a yearling, 3rd Glasgow as 2-ycar-old, 3rd Royal aa 3-vear-old; these being the only times shewn. He also won the following premiums : Lord Lonsdale, Lowther, Londonderry, Rhine of Galloway, Argyle Tenantry. and he was the 6tud horse at Black hall for some years. His stock have also been highly successful in the ring. Carthusian's dam, Susy, by Darnley, was bred by the Marquis of Londonderry, and is one of the best mares in his stud. When a yearling she took Ist at Stranraer, and later took many prizes, including Ist at the Royal Cambridge, Ist and champion at the Border Union Show, Kelso. Castlereagh upheld the reputation of the famous Juondonderry stud for many years with great success. His dam, Nelly, at Glasgow, and won the champion cup at the London Royal when 6 years old. was a daughter of the famous Prince of Wales (673), and was a great prize-taker. Nelly's dam Tojjsy was Ist as a 3-year-old May Maid, King's Commander's dam, is a splendid breeding mare, got by the noted prize horse, Premier Prince, who held the Duke of Argyle's and other premiums. Premier Prince was by Prince of Wales, out of Galloway Lass, the dam of the champion mare. Pandora, who foaled Mains of Airies and Handsome Prince, two noted stallions. May Maid took Ist prize and the medal at Campbelltown Show. King's Commander is a big upstanding, gay horse of rare quality, with the best of bone, feet and pasterns, and straight close action.
