WELLINGTON. November 00. The Council of the New Zealand Rowing Association at ;i mooting to-night decided lo obtain legal advice on. the question whether a fisherman who uses a rowing boat or a motor launch is a professional. The programme for the championship regatta at Mercer next February was submitted for approval. The prize money totals £250, of which £IOO is allotted to the Championship Fours. It was diici.ied to ask the Auckland' Association to alter the times appointed for the championship rate, so that crews can take part in more than one event, and to see if a Youths' Fours can be included in place of one of the light-weight events. The Prime .Minister states that the financial stringency which had been experienced in New Zealand for some time has now- eased considerably. The Advances to Settlers Department is bringing money into the country at the rate of £ICO|OOO a month for lending purposes. No money loaned out by the Advances to Settlers Department is being borrowed in the Dominion. The Magisterial recount of the votes at the local option poll in the llutt district was concluded to-day. No-license was lost by two and three-fifths votes. DUNFDIX. November 50. At a meeting of the Benevolent Trustees to-day reference was made to the large increase in Ilk' amount- expended on relief, and it was decided : •"That the Minister be respectfully requested when framing his proposed Hos.pita.ls and Charitable Aid Hill to make provision for a labor colony, and for the coercion' of the loafer, who neglects to support himself and those dependent oni him." A most unusual' case was heard at the .Juvenile Court this morning, when a boy, 15 years of age. was charged before Mr 11. "\V. Bishop, 'S.M, with stealing 24s 'from his father. The boy's father said that his son took his horse and 24s in money and cleared out from home. After he had ridden the horse for some distance lie turned it adrift, and continued his journev on foot. ifc was subsequently arrested at ilethven. The Magistrate seemed quite surprised that a father should lav a charge like this against his son. He'pointed out that it was likely to le:id to the boy being branded as a criminal. The father said that his sole object in bringing the boy to Court was to frighten him. He had left home on a nrevious occasion, and he (the father) could do nothimr with him. The boy had' been brouulit up with his grandmother, and had never been placed under restriction by that lady. Consequently he resented restriction now. The boy said he would sooner go to the industrial schol than so back and live with his Barents. His mother was dead, but his stepmother was kind to him. He did not like his father. The Magistrate said he had- never met a hoy who was so determined. Subsequently the charge of theft was withdrawn, and the boy was charged with being uncontrollable, and was "committed to the Wcreroa Training Farm at Levin. '

In the Utility Club's egg-laying competition at Lincoln College Inst week the number of eggs laid was 1166, making a grand total to date of 32,174. The best livings for the week were:—Mrs W. O. At the Police Court this morning Frederick. Owens, a youni: nrin, denied a charge that he attempted to commit eyucide yesterday morning. Station Sergeant Johnston said that early yesterday morning Owens' brother informed Constable Watson that accused had attempted to commit suicide by taking an overdose of chlorodyno. Tlie constable visited accused's hou.se and found that his father had administered an emetic, and had Bent for Dr Duncan. The doctor said that accused was not in danger, but he (the doctor) advised the constable to take him in charge, and consequently Owens was arrested. Accused had been suffering from insomnia for some time past, and ot late bad become despondent. Tn reply to the Magistrate, the accused said he had been taking chlorodyne in order to make him sleep. The 'Magistrate : A very foolish thin;;'. After a time the drug loses its effect and there is no drunr which I know of that makes a man so despondent. Sooner or later von will kill voursclf. Accused: No fear of that. The Magistrate : You will do it by accident. The man who takes drugs is always a danger to himself. There is nothing more disastrous than a man taking drugs to make himself nleen. 1 would recommend you to put vour«elf under some doctor. Sooner or later you will land yourself in very serious trouble. However, you are discharged.

AUCKLAND. November 30. At a lareelv-attended meeting of the Auckland ' Amateur Athletic Club tonight it was decided to bold a New Zealand Marathon Race, of a- distance not exceedinu 15 miles, to take place in March next. The meeting was most enthusiastic, and points to a revival of amateur athletics in Auckland. It was suggested 1 that the prize for the Marathon Race be a silver laurel wreath. It was decided to apply to tho N.Z.A.A. Association for permission to hold the race. About 40 i.es members wer-2 prop'-se-:! for the Auckland Club, the annual meeting of which will be held on December 14th. HASTINGS. November 30. The Poverty Bav . nrf Club decided to appeal to the Racing Conference against the Tlawk-es Bay Metropolitan Club's decision revoking the disqualification passed on tho jockev'Weelev in connection with the running of Andrew Mac at the spring meeting. MASTERTON. November 30. A shunter named Leonard Knight was killed at the railway station at Masterton this morning. Deceased was trying to connect the engine with a truck when he slipped, and the locomotive passed over him, bis body being frightfully mangled. Death w.as almost instantaneous. _ The young man had not long been stationed at Masterton.

ASHBURTON. November 30. As the result of persistent rumors that a brewery or beer depot was to be established'on the border of the Ashburton no-license district boundary, which is now only a mile outside the town, a member of 'the No-license Council telegraphed _to the Minister of Customs to-day askin<r for a denial of the rumor, as such action would be regarded as an outrage on the nublic sentiment. Replying, the Hon. J. A. Millar stated that no permit for a depot had been granted, but the law did not require any permit for the erection of a brewery. Notification had been received as required "by law. that a brewery was about to be erected, but the matter'had not yet been dealt with. The Government would, so far as it had power, endeavor to prevent the niacins of any brewery or depot immediately on the boundaries of a no-license distinct.
