Waitaki County Council.

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Waitaki County Council was held this afternoon, there bcins present Messrs Borrie, Reid, Newlands, Porter. Wylie, Sutherland, and Oats. Miss Martin wa6 elected acting-cleric in the absence of Mr Martin, Comity Clerk, and took the chair. Miss Martin read the sections of the Act dealing witji the annual meeting, and then asked for nominations for the position of Chairman for the ensuing year. Mr Reid proposed Mr Borrie, whose nomination was seconded by Mr Newlands. Mr D. .Sutherland was proposed by Mr Porter and seconded by Mr Wylie. The election resulted : For Mr Sutherland—Messrs Porter. Wylie, and Oats ; for Mr Borrie—Messrs Reid and Newlands. Mr Sutherland was therefore declared dub- elected, and bricfiv returned thanks. ORDINARY MEETING. The same members were present at the ordinary meeting, Mr Sutherland presiding.

The Chairman moved that a letter of condolence and sympathy be sent to the wife of the late Mr John Shaw in the loss of her husband, who had sat at the Council table for many years as a useful member.—The motion was seconded' by Mr Newlands. The Chairmam welcomed Mr Oats as the new member for Kakanui. Messrs King and Orbell, of Fairfield, waited on the Council with a view to gaining satisfaction regarding the water supply on their properties. Mr Orbell said there had been a shortage of water for 12 days, only sufficient coming along for household purposes, and that had now ceased. He had made representations to the ranger and Mr Banks, but without success. He was there to point out that this state of affairs recurs in each case every year. He had been informed that the reason why the water did not come down was that the people above did not keep the races clean. If that was the case, those people should be bound to clear out ->e races, or the work done at their expense. The ranger had too much around to cover durinsr the summer months, and Derhaps it would be found necessary to put on another during the summer. He trusted steps would be taken for an effective removal of the grievance.—Mr King said that for the past three years there had been a shortage of water on the property he now owned. There, were four races through the place, and they were all ohort of water. Without a tank he would not have enough water for household use. and he had 35 chains to go for water for his stock.—lt was

oenerally recognised that the members of the deputation had a real grievance, and the Engineer was instructed to take immediate" steps t«> alleviate the trouble. Tin- Auditor-General returned the ba-lance-sheet duly audited, and the I'hanman was authorised to sign this. K Smith, Waitaki South, protested against the Council entertaining Messrs AUan and Wise's applications to have a road line at Steward Settlement closed.— Received. , , V case of typhoid fever was reported from Island " Stream, scarlet fever at Otiake. and typhoid at Herbert. . Joseph Eraser. Livingstone, complained that a road which bad been opened adjoining Keen and Brayson's claim had been blocked tor dray tratlic since the Hood, bv pipes and boxes.—Left to the Engineer and the member for the riding. The Commissioner of Crown Laiffls asked that the Council give its concurrence in having the water race connected with the Kurow Settlement vested in the Council with a view to the appointment of a Board of Control.—Agreed to, provided the Land Board define the boundaries of the district. Mr James Harrow wrote concerning tlu> line of the road leading through his property.—Mr Borrie said" that Mr OarrowluuTbeeu asked: to appoint an arbitrator, but had not yet done so. It was decided that- application be called for next meeting for rangers and dogtax collectors. A tender was received from Mr .7. Moir for thu supply of dog collars at, sJ<l, and this was accepted. The .next meeting of the Council was fixed for Thursday, 22nd prox. Mr George G-eddes, Georgetown, drew attention to the dangerous crossing atwhich a serious accident- occurred recently, the road not, being sufficiently wide.—Ke'ferred to the Engineer and the member for the riding. . Mr James Carson, Entield, complained again about the embankment Mr Campbell has erected at- the end of the street. -■• Mv Banks saidi that the matter would be dealt with as soon as it could be got at. — The matter was .left- to the Engineer. Th-a Town Clerk wrote offering the road grader to the Council at £7s.—The Engineer, was asked, to report at next nieelMr H. Phelomig complained that- the Council .had. during his absence from home, cancelled his contract for gravelling at Papakaio, a.nd asked that his deposit be refunded, lie had made two attempts to start- the contract, being blocked on the first occasion by the fact that the ■gravel pit was being used by someone else, and the second time he had postponed work at the suggestion of the Engineer.— Mr Borrie said that the contract was let' a year past- in June last.—lt- was agrcid. on' Mr Borric's motion, that the mone..be refunded. Tenders were accepted as follows: Bridge near Kurow—Hobert Gibson, £lß.> 15s ; "formation of Roxby street—Meld over until Engineer has made inquiries, reserving right- to accept the lowest tender ]i inquiries are satisfactory.
