Frozen Meat Market.
The Colonial Consignment and Dis'.ributi'ig Company, Ltd.", report under date June 14 : New Zealand mutton.—The month's receipts amount to 185.086 carensoi, and the total far the year, carcases, shows an increase of 151,289 carcases. 'J'h's is the m:>st disappointing section of the frozen meat market. Conditions have been favorable for an advance in values for some time p-ist, hut other dcscriptbns have been selling too cheaply to ]iermit of the attempt, and the demand Ins scarcely been brisk enough to >.-a:-rant the step without support all round. Stocks in store are. in'moderate compa.-s ard the afloats are ml heavy. Canterbury sheep arc somewhat n.arecaml prices show no change at to 4Jd per lb, according to wciilit and quality. North .Islands constitute the hulk of the offerincs, and light carcases have improved to 3£c'i per lb, and the bottom fiiure for heavy shee]) is about 3jjd. per lb. Ewes are still very plentiful and the pord carcass are cheap at the current quotation of £{'J to 3-Jd ner Hi, but heavy wasteful sheep are still selling down to 2Jd per lb. New Zealand Lamb —The month's ini. ports, amounting to 400,930 carcascf., have rot proved at all too many for the trade, and, in fact, at the end of May, theTe was an .absolute scarcity of Canterbury lambs. The receipts for the year now show that the surplus over last year's Ajtuxck has been reduced to 78,501 carcases, but the position at the two dates show a wide difference, values being fully per lb higher , uns year with stocks in much more progressive comprss. The demand has left nothing to tc desired' anci has been of the usual progrensive character. At the close prices are not quite so firm as they were, probably owing to the a.rrival of two or three large cargoes. Canterbury lambs' can be quoted at s|d to s|d per lb and North Island at 4£: l to sgd per lb. Some 20.0C0 Australhn lambs have come to hand in the four weeks, and these are coming on the market in small quantities. " They are selling at 4jjd to 4Jd per lb. Frozen Beef,—L'ght 6:ipp.' : re and lii.-h prices have been the feature •." t ,- c mrrket for frozen beef. Only 39.000 nuartenj have come to baivl from South America and 36,0C0 quarters from New Zealand, makiii'.' a total very much below the average There k.is been in conreqiicnee some difficiVty in sitisfying the demand. New Zealand "beef ha» almost dnapneayd fTom the market and for the little ohtniuaolc has bee-i paid for hinds and 1 3j|d for fores. For River l'late beef of good quality up to 4d for hindquarters and 31d for fores has been obtained, hut there has: been a fiir proportion of plain inferior beef which lire- not commanded more than 3A per Ih for hinds and 3d for fores. A similar condition of things has prevailed on the Provincial markets.
