(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON. June 23. Captain Thompson, of (the. steamer Kahu, at Castlepoint, telegraphed to Inspector Ellison this afternoon as follows:--"! have to report that during the Niuner hour, between Matakuna. and Castlepoint, about--12.30 o'clock, a seaman named Andrew Tai is believed to have jumped ovorl>oard from the s.s. Kahn/' dune 21. Over 4000 people .attended, the memorial service held to-dny at the Town Mall in connection with the de.alh of Mr Seddon. On the platform were the clergy of nearly u'll denominations. The Premier and his colleague and members of both branel>cs of the Legislature, and members of the late Mr Seddon's family were also present. Several hymns were sung, and a special prayer was offered by tho Rev. P. W. Fivirolough, At the conclusion of tho service the° Dead March was played on the organ. The sentence of death passed on William Knowles, alias, W. A. R. Freeman, for the murder of his wife at Rabnerston North, has been commuted to imprisonment for life. CHRISTCH L'RCM. June 23. A voung woman named Eva- Maud Eason attempted to board the 2 p.m. train from Ghristchurch to Lyttelton yesterday While the. train was in motion, but tell between the station platform and the train. She was dragged along ior some distance, sustaining concussion of the brain and severe bruises, and died shortly after admission to the hospital. At an inquest h'f'kl this afternoon a verdict of accidental death was returned. . A two-year-old child aiamed May Lettic Fleming, whose parents live at Moth veil, died on Friday from burns accidentally received that morning while its mother was away from the house. TIMAIIU. June 25, At the ,'mnua.l meeting of tho South Canterbury Jockey Club this afternoon the report and balance-sheet were adopted. 'The former stated that the profit for the year was £461, and. £332 had been spent ftpeut on improvements, making nearly £ISOO so spent in three years. 'The amount paid in stakes was £1470 —a. record lor the club. A. long discussion took place on the question of including future •programmes, the Committee haying taken umbrage at- a. disqualification ol a trotter by their stewards having been upset- on ■appeal by the New Zealand Trotting Association, and. to avoid the risk of incurring a similar slap in the face in future the" majority of the Committee favored omitting trots. Several members urged their retention, and a petition in support of this view was received from 40 interested in trotiing. A motion thai trots be retained without, any conditions was re- : jetted bv 10 to 9, and a motion that trots i be included on condition 'that the Xew Zea- ' land Trotting Association at their own expense send a man. to take charge ol the trotting events was carried by 12 to 5. The retiring members of Committee were re-elected unopposed.
