THE NEW TOWN HALL.

'Co the Editor. Sir, —I notice that certain parties ar said to he organising in order to oppos the building of the Town Hall. I am snr that the good sense of tho majority wi not sanction such proceeding. A.s persor ally I am certain that the .scheme \vi lie absolutely successful financially and s the same time fill an aching void in 01 district, I liave much pleasure in donblin my previous subscription to the Mail funt ami thus counterbalancing llr Gardiner' temporary defection. The town is aboi to possess a building which will contai municipal otilces, such as we have not a present, and also a- theatre, in which ora torios, operas, and dramas can be pro dueed, public meetings of all kinds lield and which will cater for those classes o the community which enjoy entertainment! of legitimate character. It behoves a] good citizens, therefore, to rally round and carry the proposal with enthusiasm.— I am, etc., K. M'ADAM. December 9, 1905.

To the Editor. Sir, —I need hardly say I was very mnch astonished to read Mr W. (Jardiner's letter in your Saturday's isfiae. Personally, I should have, teen very sorry to append my name to such sentiments, and I have no doubt the bulk of your readers arc of my opinion. However, that is a matter for Ml" Gardiner himself. The result of his action, I think, will l>e ti) benefit the townliall scheme, not only in increased subscriptions, but also by making tht) carrying of the poll a, certainty. Mr Gardiner would have us believe sir, that because Oamaru has decided to keep its' annual drink bill of £IB,OOO for more legitimate pnrposes. residents will not. patronise the theatre, nor will companies visit the town. That seems to be liquor logic. I may say sir, that since Saturday night several pounds have been handed to uio for the fund, and I have no doubt that much more will be forthcoming, which will enable us to do without the "contributions of Mr W. Gardiner and those, who think like him. I have much pleasure, therefore, in enclosing £5 5s as a donation to the fund,—l am, elc, D. SINCLAIR.
