(Per Pbess Association.! WELLINGTON. August 18. At a meeting of th© Victoria College Council last evening it was decided to make an appeal to the public for funds for the oollege, and a committee was appointed in connection with the matter. The question of "Star" Chamber sittings in divorce Cases was raised before •Mr Justice Cooper this morning. His Honor declined to order the Press not to publish particulars of a case before the Court. If it was in the interests of the public morals he would not hesitate to order non-publication, but his experience was that the newspapers of the colony were exceedingly careful not to publish anything likely to offend the public morals, and he was opposed to "Star" Chamber proceedings unless under exceptional circumstances.
AUCKLAND,
August 18. Arrived—Tarawera, from the south ; Kathleen Hilda, barque, from Newcastle. WESTPORT." August 18. A Swede, named David Petersen, a sailor on the Pukaki, informed the police of an aggravated assault committed on him in the forecastle of the Pukaki. An alleged fight occurred, in which he and two Italians were concerned. He said that one ■of the Italians had bit off a portion of his (Petersen's) left ear. Petersen declined to give further information, because the action for assa'ilt would delay the ship, which was about to sail for Lyttelton. Dr M'Kenzie dressed the wound and other injuries .which Petersen had sustained about the face and retained the severed portion of the ear. It is understood that an action will be taken when the Pukaki reaches Lytteflton.
