The weather was clear and sea calm; but the weather lias since been unfavorable and there is lit-tle hopes of saving the valu able cargo of produce, which is .washing ashore. The 'Croki was valued at about £15,000 and partially insured in the National oflice of New Zealand, but the amount has not transpired. An official estimate of Saturday's attendance at- the races was 28,000—a- record for ■Hand wick.
The Admiral has advised tho warships Wallaroo and Mildura to be recommissioned with new crews, which, with th& new crew for the 'J.'auranga, will arrive at Sydney at the end of,.November in the cruisers Diadem and Scylla. The Ringarooma. is to be placed in the reserve, her crew returning to England.
Received September 15, at 9.42 a.m. Sydney, -September IS. The Northern miners will resist any reduction in the selling price of coal, considering it unjustified. There is now pending a case in the Arbitration CouiJ as to whether the proprietors are justified in reducing to ten shillings. Pending a decision no action will be taken. In the meantime the. Miners' ■Executive are considering an offer of the Newcastle (Wallsend Company) to maintain the existing price and conaitions for another, year. They are hopeful that other companies will do likewise.
Received September 15, at 10.36 a.m. ■Sydney, September 15. Sir James Hector abandoned his trip to Canada and- returned owing to the death of his son. Sir Hector and son the day after their arrival at Vancouver were engaged taking photographs of Selkirk range, when ■the son was taken suddenly ill of appendicitis and was removed tc the hospital. Ho succumbed the following day. Sir Hector returns to New Zealand on the Warrimoo on Saturday. • In connection with Wakeful's dropping back on the far side of the course in the Spring Stakes on :&turday ) the Jockey Club inquired into- the alleged interference with the mare att. that stage by Postillion, whoso jockey was severely cautioned. Noumea advices state that the French are taking vigorous steps to wTest the New 'Hebrides trade from the British and divert it-to Nbnmea,'
