THE LOCAL MARKETS. ' Oamaru Mail Office, Monday Afternoon. The local grain market is lifeless, with no present prospect of animation. There is practically nothing doing in wheat, any transactions being confined to small lines to meet immediate requirements, and these are mainly restricted to velvet for mixing purposes. It is, however, known that millers' supplies are running down, but what will happen when these are exhausted must depend largely upon the result of the meeting of the New Zealand Four-millers' Association to be held shortly with a view to remodelling the Association and placing the flour-milling industry upon a more satisfactory footing. It is clear that one of two things* must be raised to a payable figure or wheat must give way. At present millers are losing money, and it is no secret that unless something is done several mills are likely to close down. There is more inquiry for fowl wheat, but there is very little available here. Oats are decidedly weaker. The withdrawal of the Eakaia and the absence of any promise of -means of direct- shipment has caused prospective shippers to hold their hand, and the present outlook is by no means encouraging. A little business has been done in Danish oats at quotations during the week, but- notliir.cr really worth talking about. There is nothing new to report- in regard to malting barley? of which there is none oifering. 'fhire are inquiries for feed barley, but offers, in sympathy with oats, were lower than quotations, and no business has been encouraged, holders firmly re'fusing to sanction a reduction in prices. A few sales of potatoss were made last week at quotations, but the demand has since weakened. We ciuote—
