On Saturday evening next "Miss Janet Waldorf, pronounced one of the greatest artistes that America has ever (produced, will appear ait the Theatre Royal for a short season of three nights, when, a series of classical plays will be .produced. Miss Waldorf brings with her a great reputation, which has been gained.,by. hard study and close attention to her art, and she is,how,considered to he one of the. most gifted, and talented artistes of'the age.' For the past five years Miss Waldorf has held the leading position on the.stage.in America against allcomers, including .such stars as Miss Julia Marlow, Miss" Genivieve Ward, Miss Lily Langtry,.' Mrs Brown Potter, Miss Nance O'Neill, arid a host of others. Miss Waldorf made her debut at Daly's Theatre, New York, some five years ago, and scored one of the greatest successes ever made in that city. A prolonged tour-of the States followed, amd after that the Philippines Islands, Japan, China, and India was visited with .phenomenal results. In every country and clime visited fresh laurels were added to those already gained, and the Press in Auckland and Uhristphurch speak in the highest possible terms of Miss Waldorf's chamming acting. In criticising Miss Waldorf's representation of. "Juliet," the Christchurch Press says";— "The representation of Juliet is entitled to take the highest rank amongst the many eminent actresses played the -part here... In. inany respects Miss Waldorf reminds one of Mrs.Scott Siddons, though, evincing more power and intensity' in the stronger scenes, whilst showing as much sweetness and grace in. the lighter ones.". Miss Waldorf has hundreds more notices of the same description from all parts of the world. Miss Waldorf will be supported by Mr Norval MacGregor, an actor of high standing in London and America, and he has already proved his worth during the New Zealand tour. The opening production will be Shakespeare's sublime tragedy "Romeo and Juliet." On Monday evening Bulwer Lytton's great drama "The Lady of Lyons" will 'be staged, and on Tuesday, the last night of 'the season, the charming pas-t-oral comedy "As You Like It" will toe submitted. The box plan will "be opened at Mr Meldrum's music establishment tomorrow (Thursday) at ten o'clock, when seats can be secured without an extra booking fee toeing charged.
