On this oooasion thoro woro only two letters—yourß to mo and my roply to tho samo. Your letter was of a privato naturo. and so was my roply. In tho wholo of my political experience I havo novor known a privato lottor to bo used_ in tho manner in which you havo used mine withoub tho oonßont of tho party writing being obtainod. You havo dono this at a timo when I was abßonb from tho colony by writing to my colleague, who knew nothing of our oorrospondonco, and when my return to tho colony was doubtful. lam not able at tho present timo to publish your letter and my reply, as both are lockod up in my desk Id Wollington, and thoro is no possible means of my gotting them until I return there myeolf. Howovor, to got over thiß difficulty I shall bo glad if you will publish both lottors, and lob tho pooplo of Now Zealand judgo botweon us fairly as to whether I doaorvo all tho consuro you endeavor to throw upon mo for tho lottor in question. I also notice in your speech you thought propor to attack my land policy and administration. You do this at a timo when you know ib is impossiblo for me to take_ tho platform to roply to you.
