Presents to a Lady. EXTRAVAGANCE IN THIS DIRECTION LEADS TO BANKRUPTCY. A first meeting of creditors was hold at London Bankruptcy Court a few days ago in the case of H. H. Tankard, described as of Watford and Neasden, olub proprietor. He was formerly in partnership with four brothers as cotton "p'Ters. In 1896 the firm was converted into a limited oompany with a capital of LIBO,OOO, of whloh the debtor's share was L 42.505. He received LSOO a year as director, and also L 750 a year as woolbuyer, but about 18 months ago he lost those appointments. He stated that during the lasb four years and a-half he has lost L 12.000 or L 13.000 on the Stock Exchange, and about LSOOO at cards. His accounts showed ranking liabilities L 2435, and assets estimated to produce L 4173. Debtor ascribed his position to Stock Exchange losses and to extravagance in living. He was the proprietor of a golf club, whioh he acquired in December last. He had stated that about four years ago he became acquainted with a lady, on whom he expended the greater part of his capital and income, and this was really the cause of his failure. The Assistant-Receiver further reported that debtor had taken a lease of a house In Ourzon street for the lady, at a rental of L 325 a year, and had sublet It to her for L 5 a year, and the furniture In those premises (now included In the assets) waa estimated to realise L3OOO. Since the receiving order, an injunction had been obtained restraining the lady from dealing with the furniture, pending the hearing of a motion to determine the question with regard to the Validity of a settlement whloh was exeouted by debtor in his favor in June, 1897. It also appeared that he had given the lady jewellery to the value of L7OOO. and other valuable presents. Mr C. J. Alton, accountant, was appointed trustee to wind up the estate In bankruptcy.
