A strong north wind failed to temper the sun's rays. There was a very large attendance, and the stands were congested. The lawn presented a very pretty sight. (The latter was ridden a nice waiting race, and won cleverly at the finish by two lengths. Time, 6min 18fsec. RAILWAY HANDICAP. Symmetry ... 1 Sunflower _ 2 The Don Twenty-eight others ran. Betting—7 to 2 Blair. Sunflower led till below the distance, when tymmetry came with a great dash, and won by a length and a half. [Lime, lmin 15£ sec. NURSERY HANDICAP. Revenue ._ ... .-.1 Catherine Wheel... ... ... ' 2 Viscount 11. 3 Fourteen others started. Betting—s to 4 gainst Revenue, who made a forward movement at the half distance, and coming on, won easily by a length. Time, lmin 2§sec. MELBOURNE CUP. The Grafter (J. Gough).„ M 1 Wait-a-Bi6 .- .„ 2 Cocos ... ._ —3 War God .„ .„ .„ All the acceptors but Rosebery and Eleuainian started. Betting—s to 1 Massinissa, 6 to 1 Clarion, 7 to 1 The Grafter, 10 to 1 Merloolas, 14 to 100 to 1 the others. Passing the stand Battalion and Eleusive were in front, followed by the general bnnch, prominent in which were Relic and The b rafter. Leaving the straight vv ar God went np to the leaders, and at the mile led Battalion by two lengths, after whom came Thunder Queen, Mischief, Torch, Manfred, The Grafter, The Chief, and Cocos Along the back War God was still in front, Relic second, [The Grafter third, and The Chief fourth. Rounding the entrance to the straight War God's victory was loudly pronounced, but when fairly turned for home War God and Relic had given way to Cocos, and The Grafter had put in a claim, whilst Wait-a-Bit came with a great rattle. The latter tried to get np between The Grafter and Cocos, and this probably lost him the race, as The Grafter, struggling on gamely, secured a half a neck victory. Cocos was threequarters of a length behind Wait-a-Bit. Eme, 3min 29|sec. Mr Fielder entered a protest against Gougb, the rider of The Grafter, for interference and foul riding, but this was quickly dismissed. The Grafter's win elicited the wildest demonstration, the victory being a bad one for the ring. VICTORIA STEEPLECHASE. Domino ... ._ . 1 Tremolo _ ... 2 Spieler ... ... ._ 3 (Den others started. Betting—2 to 1 against Domino, who led all the way, and won by six lengths. Time, 4min 12sec. YAK YEAN STAKES. Sfcaffa _ - 1 Corrie Roy ... .. Moonlyong ._ ._ 3 Ten others started. Betting—3 to 1 against Watercolor, 6 to 1 S tafia. Corrie Roy's jockey was caught napping, and beaten by a neck. Time, lmin 40fsec.
