♦ (by telegraph.) (PER WHESH ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON. September 26/ At Parliament: Buildings this evening Mr Mills, M.H.R., was presented with an address of admiration and gratitude by the Italian residents of Wellington for hiß services in connection with the release of Lonis Chemis. In addition to the address, he wa» presented with a pair of gold links, and Mrs Qailici handed him a lovely bouquet. Mr Mills suitably acknowledged the gift, and appreciative speeches were delivered by Messrs Wilson, Hogg, and Liwry, M.H.R's. Chemis expressed his thanks to everyone present for their efforts inhisbehalf, specially mentioning Mr Mills, Mr Ft>rnandos, and Mr Jellicoe. At the annual meeting of the Industrial Association the president (Mr Brown) referred in torma of pride to the work the Association had done in its three years' of existence. It had held a most successful exhibition, and would shortly have a building at the cost of L3OOO, with five scholarships, and had money at interest, no debts, and an increasing roll of members. Mr Brown was re-elected president. A resolution was passed appreciating the action of the Government in deciding not to have the gaol on the Mount Cook site. At the annual meeting of the Cricket Association the balance in hand was said to be LlB. Assets over liabilities, L 155. Mr H. D. Bell was elected local vice-presi-dent. The Cricket Council decided to open the season next Saturday, if the ground were ready, and that the side losing the toss shall have the choice of innings in the return match. The question of voting a sum for the trip of the New Zealand team to Australia was referred to a committee. The result of the police inquiries consequent on the confession at Invercargill of the prisoner Thomas Petersen wore made known to the man on Saturday, with tlie object of ascertaining if he had any explanation to offer. Petersen averred that three years ago ho and his " friend " were on the Hutt racecourse, and was there also. When the " friend " saw Satherley he (the "friend") said, " I am going to do for him." and it was the remembrance of this incident, Petersen say?, that caused him to think his mate had been concerned in Satherley's disappearance. Mr Freyburg, ex-Government timber expert, who has been collecting specimens of New Zealand barks with a view to their utilisation, states that one mountain variety from the West Coast has wonderful curative effects upon throat complaints. The supply is practically inexhaustible. Mr Freyburg is about to send some large samples to medical specialists in London with a view to a thorough test in a more rigorous climate, and he thinks it may lead to the bark being placed in the British pharmacopoeia, and so create another opening for the wonderful resources of New Zealand. Further particulars of Rougetnont's career in New Zealand have come to light. It appears that he came to Wellington from Nelson about a year ago with the object of floating a company to work certain mining ground which he claimed to know of in Australia. He had a number of quartz specimens with him, but they were pronounced to be non-auriferous, and ho left them behind in Wellington. Rougemont is described as a man nuosb fescinating in conversation, full of stories of adventure, which he seems to fully believe, but as being apparently subject to hallucinations of a most extreme kind. Spiritualism is one of his hobbies ; in fact, he claims to ba not only a medium, but a healing medium, and tells of wonderful deeds he has done in that capacity. The Agent-General cables that Canadian cheese is 425, with the market rising. There is no alteration in the butter market since last week. AUCKLAND. September 26. The Waihi returns for the month were 6762 tons crushed, and the gold was valued at L 21,151. The averago is L 3 2s 61 per ton. The total yield to date is L 805.744 The Komati returns were 410 tons, and the yield LISOB ; Waitekauri Comoany, 1150 tons, returns L 5522. Another haul of picked stono in the Kapanga district, by tributors, was valued at LSOO. The charges of alleged perjury againsb ex Constable Skinner wero dismissed. Mr Brabant, S M., said there was no chance on the evidence he had before him of a jury convicting accused of perjury. The charges against ex-Constables Jackson, M*R»e, and Scott were withdrawn. The defendants had 25 witnesses for the defence. GISBORNE. September 27. The Ormond cheese factory, owned by Messrs Yernor and Nossiter was totally destroyed by fire last night. The season was to have commenced next week. Insurances : National, L 540 ; New Zealand, L 175. A man named Willian Cithew was gored by a cow whilst attempting to separate it from its calf. He lies in a critical condition.
