The Council of the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors has finally approved of the proposed general scale of charges for the colony, which had been adopted ab the recent conference of surveyors held in Wellington, and ordered its circulation for adoption by surveyors throughout New Zealand. The following Is the text of the circular, which the Council of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce is aboub to Hend to each member of Parliament.:— The Council is of opinion that bhe construction of the North Island Main Trunk Railway la being unnecessarily delayed. It; considers that the approaching lines should be jonined by the nearest practicable route, and so render remunerative the large amount of capital now lying idle." CHRISTCHURCH. September 28. The spring show of the Cauterbury Horticultural Society wai opened to-day, and is the finest ever held in Christchurch, if not in New Zealand. Mr Cockayne showed a magnificenb collection of flowering phrubs, rare bulbs, wild daffodils, fritillarias, Alpine plants native and foreign), and 110 named varieties of daffjdils. The principal prizes went to Christchurch growers. F. Cooper, Wellington, sent narcissi, which suffered in the transit. In connection with the show the Society held a garden competition, In which 20 points were given for ease of view, 20 for effect, and 20 for neatness; There were 24 entries, and the results were highly satisfactory.

AUCKLAND. September 23. H.M.S. Royalist has arrived at Papeete with a man aboard from Pitcairn Island concerned in a murder there. He was sentenced to death, and is to be taken to Fiji for execution. H.M.S. Tauranga brings Mr Moss, exBritish Resident at Raratonga, to Auokland, via Tonga. Mrs Moss and family arrived to-day. A prisoner named Herbert Isaac Tonka escaped from the hard labor gang at Forb Ciutley, but the Permanenb Artillery found him in the scrub. He was sentenced to 18 months for breaking and entering last session.
