The typhoid outbreak at Maidstone, in Kent, is assuming alarming proportions. Eleven hundred cases are reported, and the death rate is increasing. A severe thunderstorm passed over London. Several persons were killed. The Ottawa correspondent of the Times states that in July next the Canadian tariff will be made essentially pro-British. Received October 1, at 11.10 p m. Madrid, September 30. Dissension amongst the Conservative sections of the Cortes caused Premier Azcariagua to resign. Calcutta, September 30. Reports have been received that the bubonic plague has reappeared in the Karochi district. London, September 30. At a meeting of representatives of the Victoria and New Zealand meat distribution agencies, Mr N. Levi, M.L.C., Victoria, presiding, it was decided to support Mr D. Kellerman's scheme for supplying frozen meats to the London hospitals for a month with a view of testing its suitability as a diet for patients. Mr Kellerman is the well-known meat distribution expert, and this is the outcome of an organisation formed by him for bringing Australian and New Zealsnd meats more prominently before the public.
