Licensing Election.
The licensing election yesterday was a singularly quiet function, there lieing a very small poll, and very little interest attached to the result, which vas generally regarded as a foregone conclusion. The following are the returns so far as to hand :
(BY telegraph.) Asiidl'P.ton, March 24. The following is the result of the licensing poll: Temperance—Chapman, 340 ; Clephane, 337 ; Leadley, 348; Taylor, 480; Williamson, 376. Moderate— M'Farl.ine, 547 ; M'Lean, 647 31'Gilkin, 556 ; Sealy, 573; Thomas, 617The Ashburton Courthouse, Mayfield, and Green street returns are still (10.45 p.m.) to come. Very keen interest has been taken in the election, and both parties are anxiously awaiting the final result. Wellington 1 , March 24. The suburbs licensing election resulted in the return of Messrs Bolrely, King, Shand Cathie, and Barker—all temperance candidates—by a large majority over j the moderate ticket. {
