New Zealand Telegraph Service.
Ah interesting sketch of Mr Lubecki's career appars in Katipo. From this it appears that in 1865 there were but eight telegraph offices in the colony, viz.— Bluff, Invercargill, Dunedin, Oamaru, Timaru, Christchurch, Heathcote, and Xytteltbn; now there are 729. The Dunedin staff then five all told; now Mr Lubecki and his staff muster 84 strong. Then the Dunedin salary abstracts totalled L6OO annually; now the amount is L9636—excluding lineconstructing party arid wages men. Telegraphy was a luxury only to be indulged in by- the wealthy at that early date, when it cost more to send a ten-word message to Invercargill from Dunedin than it now does for a .cablegram to Australia from any part of New Zealand. This, though it may seem incredible nowadays, is amply proved by the distance tariff then in vogue,, which was, for a ten-word message from Dunedin, at the, rate of 5s to Invercargill, 6s to Christchurch, 10s to Hokitika, and lis to Greyinojith. The number of telegrams sent from all dffides in 1865 was 27,407; the value of business done for the year being 116045 ) 2s 4d, while the yearly number at .the .present day is shown by the last annual report to be 2,033,800, the value of business done being 1/136,062 12s 2d. Then there were 699. miles of lines and 1390 of wjre rfippw the figures are 596 H and 14,8811 respectively. '■■ :•'■■■■ -
