AUSTRALIAN NEWS.

(per united press association). Received September 15, at 6.30 p.m. Sydney, September 15. The week closed with a considerably easier feeling in the produce and feed markets, though there are a few quotable changes. The increased prospects of rain towards the end of the week caused holders to rush in stocks heavily, and there, was a consequent easing; but unless rain falls in a day or two it is expected the markets will harden rapidly again. Mr Davitt has cabled another LIOOO to Mr Justin M'Carthy, principally the result of his Queensland tour and subscriptions. George Dean has been summoned by his wife for the maintenance of herself and child. Melbourne, September 12. Arrived —Ship Dharwar, from London. After passing the C ipe she picked up a boat containing several men belonging to the ship Prince Oscar, which a London cable recently advised was sunk by colliding with an unknown vessel. The unfortunate mariners had been in the boat for several days, and had suffered great hardships. The Dharwar signalled a passing ship by which those rescued were forwarded to London. Sydney, September 14. To-day was observed as one of humiliation and prayer throughout the colony, and special prayers for rain and sermons were delivered in all the churches. A few drops of thunder rain fell in the afternoon, but it soon passed off, and the heat was intense. Light rain fell in the Western districts. News has been received of the foundering of the brigantine Zeno, bound from Newcastle to Wellington with 470 tons of coal, off Lord Howe Island, on the 6th instant, during a very heavy gale. When the vessel was two hundred miles from the Island she sprang a leak, and her position being critical, as the water was rising fast, it was decided to make for the island. The crew worked splendidly, and by great exertions managed to keep the water down until within sight of Lord Howe. The wind then fell a dead calm, and the vessel tumbled about in a somewhat troublesome sea. As the water continued to gain, Captain Fry and his wife, along with the passengers and crew, took to the boats, and shortly after the vessel foundered within two miles of land. The boats reached the shore s.ifely, and the occupants will be brought to Sydney next trip of the Birksgate. Received September 16, at 0 50 a.m. Sydney. September 15. Sailed—Tekapo, from Wellington. Mr Warren, of the Eastern Extension Company, is a passenger. Melbourne, September 15. Arrived—Waihora, from the Bluff. The boat picked up by the Dharwar contained the captain, first and second officers, carpenter, two seamen, and two boys of the Prince Oicar.
