SPECIAL TELEGRAMS.
(BY TELEGRAPH ) WelldiGtoii, June 8. A private telegram received in town yesterday from the Minister of Lands reports that he is still improving in health and expects to leave for Wellington on Monday. In some quarters it has been stated that the Midland Railway officials refused to take service under the Government. Mr Blow, Under-Secretary of Public Works, states that when the manager of the line refused to do certain things required he was given 24 hours to consider whether he would or would not accept service under the Government. He sent his resignation in to the company and decided to act under the Government. All station masters on the line also gave written acceptances of service under the Government. As the company declines to hand over the plans the Government are considering the advisability of starting surveys in order to construct new plans. ! The Oatnaru Coursing Club announce in another column their intention of holding a meet at Papakaio on Thursday, 20th inst., when an All-aged Stake for an unlimited number of dogs, will be competed for. This being the Club's first stake for this season, no doubt there will be a fair entry, and given fine weather there should be a good day's sport in the open. Entries will close on the IBth inst., at the Globe Hotel.
