Temperance Work in the Army.
Letters from Viscount Wolseley and Lord Roberts were read at a Black Watch temperance meeting in Edinburgh Castle last week. Lord Roberta wrote :—" The. deep interest I have always felt in the promotion of temperance in the Army led m'e-to take jup ; the cause when I was Commander-in-Chief in India, and when the Church of England Total Abstinence Society was in some danger of falling to the ground, owing to the departure of its energetic secretary, Mr Gregson, I instituted the Army Temperance Association, and I am grateful to say that when I left India in 1893 nearly one-third of the total number of British soldiers in that country belonged to it. My long experience m the Army has shown me how essential the inculcation of temperance habits is to the health and well-being of soldiers. Amongst temperance men crime is very greatly diminished and the number of cases in hospital much reduced. lam sure that by providing rational and i legitimate amusement for men the cause of temperahceiis besfc.promoted, and I am glad to see that your society sets' to work "bn'tfoeie lines.'" ■"" , \__" • -
