(by telegraph.) (FEB PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON. May 3. At a meeting of the town cricket association tbe question of a guarantee to New South Wales and Victorian teams was deferred pending receipt of information as to the actual amount of the guarantee required. It was decided to act with the Rugby Union and Football Association in preventing defaulting players from taking part in these branches of sport. The Labor department will wait until the Auckland shopkeepers have made a breach of the law by failing to close on Saturday, and will then prosecute under the new Gazette notices. May 4. A case of what-looks like ingenious fraud has been unearthed here. A package supposed to contain L6OO worth of medical trusses arrived from America, but the consignee could not be found. Having heard of a somewhat similar occurrence in Australia, the package was opened in the presence of various officials and found to be empty. The supposed senders drew upon an imaginary firm in Wellington and got the draft discounted in Philadelphia and made off with the cash, in which case someone has been left lamenting. DUNEDIN. May 3. In connection with the recent address by Mr Bragato, the Victorian Government viticulturist, it has been decided to form a Central Otago Vine and Fruit Growers' Association, with the object of promoting the culture of fruit and the vine. AUCKLAND. May 2. At a meeting of delegates to the Association Football Union correspondence was received from Wellington and Sydney re the visit of a New South Wales team. It was agreed to guarantee half the net gate money towards the expenses of the visitors. May 3. At a meeting of business men it was resolved to form a Fire Insurers' Protection Association. It was stated that there was no objection to the rates, which were low enough in Auckland, but complaint was made in respect to the average cla»se inserted in policies. Captain Julian A. Baker, of H.M.S. Katoomba, now in port, has sent in his resignation to the Commander-in-chief, who has accepted it. Captain Baker is returning Home on private business, but his resignation will not. take effect till he is relieved by his successor, who is shortly due in Australia. GISBORNE. May 3. At the Magistrates Court Messrs Dunlop, Lewis, and Adair, three shopkeepers, were charged under the Shop Act with opening their premises last Saturday. The points raised were the validity of the Borough Council's resolution appointing Saturday, the motion not having been in writing and signed by the mover and seconder, also whether the Council bad power to revoke that resolution and appoint another day. This they have done, and Thursday has been very generally observed for the last two weeks. The Magistrate reserved his decision.
