The Bev. W. Thomson will preach at St. Paul's Church to-morrow. Mr Elder, jun., of Maheno, who is studying for the ministry, will preach in Emmanuel Church to-morrow. The secretary of the church has been notified that Mr Humphries, who is coming to fill the pulpit with a view to permanent settlement, will arrive in town abeut the 14th inst. The concert and dance to be held in the Enfield Schoolhouse, on the 10th inst., will be in aid of the funds of the local library, and not for the school funds as previously announced. The storehouse and stables of Mr J. Hutton, Livingstone, were destroyed by fire on Thursday evening last. The building was a stone one with a thatch roof, and there is nothing to show how the fire started. The place was completely gutted and a large quantity of stores, together with several sets of harness and saddles were destroyed. The North German hold a line of L2OO on the building and stock. A quadrille assembly will be held in connection with the Oamaru Naval Artillery in the Union Hall every Tuesday evening, commencing on Tuesday next. The hall has now been renovated and thoroughly done up and has undoubtedly the best floor in town for dancing purposes. The annual concert and dance in aid of the Glenavy School fund will be held in the schoolhouse on Thursday, May 23rd. Full particulars appear elsewhere. Sergeant O'Grady has received word that five men can be taken from here to work at Galatea, 35 miles north of Rotorua. Application must be made at once There are now 137 men on the Bureau books.
Mr Paulin predicted last night: " S.W. to S. E. winds and rain showers. Indications very unsettled." We were mistaken yesterday in stating that the Oamaru Club scored its fourth victory in the bowling matches on Thursday. Thursday's win was the first for the Oamaruvians, the Phoenix Club having won the other three. Mr James Gatfield, Eveline, has adopted a practical method of showing his sympathy with the unemployed, by giving 50 sheep to the Labor Bureau for distribution.
