The Palmerston North Borough Council has decided to recommend tho Government that the name Manawatu bo substituted for Palmerston North. March 21.,, Messrs Anderson and Co., Christcliurcli, are the successful tenderers for a bridge over the Mataura. DUNEDIN. March 2Q. At the Supreme Court to day, William Wintrup claimed LISOO from Mitchell, Warren and others for damages sustained owing to tho negligence of the defendants. Mitchell and Warren, as trustees for Mary Brodie and, others, were owners of a section in Rattraystreet. Wintrup, who wqs in the employ of a ccrporation contractor, was engaged cleaning the street, when a branch of a tree in the section was blown down, striking him and rendering him helpless for life. The tree was a large bluegum, GO feet high, and had boen ringed. The only question submitted to tho jury was that of damages, and they gave a verdict for L 550. The question of whether or nob the defendants aro liable will bo out before the Judge alone. CHRISTCHURCII. March 20. At the Magistrate's Court to-day Hugh Sutherland, tobacconist, was fined LI, and costs for keeping his shop open on tho half-holiday. March 21. The long spell of dry weather has at last, broken up. A drenching rain fell throughout last night, and, as the ground had a fair soaking, tho prospects of sheep for winter are improved. At the Supreme Court to-day James Baden, charged with stealing from huts at Lyell, was found guiltjT and simtenced to 18 months' imprisoqment r Albert Brown, aged 15, charged with stealing from a dwelling, was found guijty with a strong recommendation to mercy, a hope being expressed that ho might be sent where he would receive spme. instruction, for the boy could neither read nor write. The Judge referred to the case as a deplorable one, and took time to consider what to do. The only remaining case is that of T. Bernett, charged with assault with intent. The Hibernian sports were postponed to Saturday, on account of rain. INVERCARGILL. March 20. The Exchange Hall at Winton was destroyed by fire yesterday. Tho front portion was occupied by Price and Bulleid (drapers) and Woods (tailor). Very little was saved. The insurances are : Building, L3OO in New Zealand office;.. Price and Bulleid's stock L3OO and Woods L4OO, both in the Commercial Union office. GISBORNE. March 21. A largely attended public meeting was held last night to consider the question o technical education. It unanimously adopted a resolution in favor of tho proposal of the School Committee to establish technical classes. A committee was appointed to raise funds. The Government have promised £ for £ subsidy. TIMARU. March 20. Zurbriggen, Fitzgerald and Guinness ascended Mount Cook from the HocHstetter alone. They found it an easy climb. March 21.
