(feoh oeik ovrs cokf.esfoxde>t.) WELLINGTON. December 10. The Government, in replying to the representations of the Canadian Government respecting reciprocal tariff rotes in relation to several articles imported from Canada by New Zealand, and imported by Canada from New Zealand, have answered the Canadian Government that the questions will be dealt with when the revision of the tariff is under discussion, but as the law at present stands it does not permit differential rates. The following are additional votes agreed on by the Cabinet: —Roads at Akaroa, L3OO : road from Kanieri falls to Kanieri lake, L7OO ; road from the lake (Arrowtown) to Macetown, L6OO. It has been decided to expend L 2300 on the Makohine section of the North Island trunk line. Chief Judge Davy and Judge O'Brien, of the Native Lands' Court, have been appointed Validation Court Judges under the Native Land Court Validation Act of last session. The first sitting of the Court will be held at Auckland shortly. December 20. The total expenditure authorised for public works at the recent Cabinet meeting amounts to L 15,609. In the course of an article this morning the Times says that the Hon. J. M'lvenzie's behavior at Pomahaka the other day falsified the dismal predictions of objectors to the Lands for Settlement Act that the possession of votes by settlers placed on the land would effectually prevent the economic success of purchases. Instead of a pliant political tool the Pomahaka settlers found a man with a backbone who insists on strict fidelity to obligation undertaken. The Minister is entitled to the thanks of every independent-minded man in the colony for the firm stand he has taken in the matter. The ridicule which his opponents subject him to for his firmness proves that the original objection to the principle of the Land for Settlement Act was nothing but a political sham. The Premier and Mrs Seddon and the Colonial Treasurer and the Minister for Lands leave for the south by the Doric to-day.
