Convent High School.
EXHIBITION OF WORK. The exhibition of work at the Convent High School, which has been open to the public this afternoon, and will be again this evening, is well worthy of a visit. There are upwards of 100 pictures, made up of oil paintings, crayon and sepia drawings, etc. Mirror and wall panels and fancy work are in almost endless variety. We make mention of a few of the pictures, but by no means all of those that deserve notice. Miss I. Hamilton's crayon enlargement from a small carte do visite photo of her brother-in-law (Mr M'Donald, of Corriedale) is exceedingly weil done, and there is undoubted talent exhibited in it. This young lady lias also an oil painting of Mary, Queen of Scots, and also Young New Zealand ; also a sepia study in oils, black and white. Miss Maggie Hewat's " Hall's Arm," Smith's Sound, on the West Coast of Now Zealand, shows that young lady to have cultivated the true a*-t of delineating New Zealand scenery. Her other studies on exhibition are — Seascape, in oils, studio work Waterfall (Locli Lomond), oils, studio work Panel chrysanthemum, oils, nature, studio work Dog " Tiger," home work, oils, nature Arched rock, home work, oils, nature Ocean beach, homo work, oils, nature Panel clematis, home work, oils, nature Panel poppies, home work, oils, nature 2 photograph frames, home work, oils, nature Panel gladiolus, homo work, oils, nature Tambourine, " On the Avon," home work, oils, nature Plague, "Kerrera Sound," home work, oils, nature Panel roses, home work, oils, nature Face, " Cdlia," home work, oils, nature Panel apple blossom, home work, oils, nature 3 black and white watcrcolors ("Mitre Peak," " Mount Tetuto," " Lake Kakapo,") home work 2 crayons ("The Renheubaoh Falls," : " After the Hunt,") home work " A quiet afternoon," oils, home work Album, 9 watercolors, home work Opal, bird from still life and nature, homo work Miss Mary M'Callum's studies in oils are the Pink Terraces, painted from a photo ; the White Terraces, painted from a copy; Shubert, and Mary Queen of Scots. It may be noted that thero aro three studies of the last named subject on exhibition, each by a different pupil, and giving special characteristics by varying drapery and dresses. Miss M'Callum's studies of faces are very strikingly successfal, as that of her brother, taken from a photograph, is a very good likeness and is a marked success. She also oxhibits other faces in black and white taken from copies. Miss Fagan's study in oils of Murrillo's Madonna is very good, the devout expression being well caught up. Her two monograms are particularly woll done, and her oil painting of Mary Queen of Scots shows great tasto for painting. Miss Roberts' landscapes, Caswell Sounds and St. George's Sound, show very careful work. Miss Golding's oil painting of a stag's head (after Landseer) shows great natural talent as well as hard work, the thick oil colors evidently requiring a groat deal of perseverance in perfecting. This lady's crayon study of a village street is woll worth noticing, and her horses' heads at the pool, which has been christened " Members of the Temperance Society," is remarkable for its truthfulness. Miss Eliza M'Callum's pictures in oils, " Tho Dogs" (after Landseer) and " Loft in Charge " are roally good. Color appears to be this young Jady's particular forte. She has also two Swiss landscapes welldeserving of attention. Miss J. Fagan's crayon drawings of a stag at bay and horses' heads exhibit much perseverance and skill. Miss Agnes Clelland's landscape and the crayon drawings of Miss Falconer also deserve mention. The specimens of panel painting are by Mrs Wist) and Misses Ford and Farr, and tho fancy work was dune by Misses Corcoran, Cle}land. Paton, Maxwell, Llannon, Harding, Taylor, Crawford, Probert, and Delia Ford. There is also the kindergarten work which, with the pictures and fancy work, fiH tho walls and tables of tho schoolroom.
